Spiritual Disciplines

Have you ever desired to grow closer to God?  Have you ever hoped to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (what we followers call the Fruit of the Spirit)?

If you have, you are in good company.  Since the very beginning, followers of the Way have longed for intimacy with God and desired growth into spiritual maturity, and as such have engaged in a number of spiritual disciplines that have helped lead to such intimacy and growth.

Over the centuries, these practices have included silence, prayer, Bible study, Sabbath, fasting, simplicity, almsgiving, corporate worship, confession, meditating on God’s creation, journaling, pilgrimage, retreat, examen, and a wide variety of other disciplines.  Some of these practices have been done corporately; some of them have been done alone.  Some have been more active and outward focused while others have been more quiet and inward focus.  None have been magic bullets that have led to immediate closeness to God or instantaneous maturity.   Rather, all of them have been sustained practices that when done in conjunction with other practices have helped people over time to open up their hearts and minds to receive God’s grace, as well as to experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

On this page, you will find links, articles, and resources to help you engage a wide variety of these spiritual disciplines that have helped followers of the Way over the years.   Get started by reading this helpful introductory article, “What are the spiritual disciplines?”  by my friend Diana Gruver who writes on a wide variety of spiritual formation topics on her blog.    Then have fun exploring.
